Russian E-Visa Availability

August 1, 2023: Russia's Electronic Visa (E-Visa) to Resume

On August 1, 2023, Russia is set to relaunch its electronic visa (E-Visa) system, allowing eligible travelers to apply online for entry into the country. This comes after a suspension of the Russian E-Visa service since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and associated global travel restrictions.

Eligible Travelers

Russia's Foreign Ministry has announced that citizens of 50 More different countries will be eligible to obtain an electronic visa. While the specific list of eligible nationalities has not been released, it is anticipated that many of the previously eligible countries from the 2020 launch will remain eligible.

This includes citizens of European Union (EU) and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries, China, India, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Turkey, and more.

The Evolution of Russia's E-Visa

The return of Russia's E-Visa service has been a gradual process:

  • Regional E-Visas: Initially, Russia introduced separate E-Visas for specific regions, including Kaliningrad, Leningrad Oblast, Saint Petersburg, and the Far Eastern Federal District.
  • Unification Plan: The government had plans to unify these regional E-Visa systems into a single E-Visa for the entire country.
  • Pandemic Disruptions: However, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted these plans, leading to the suspension of all E-Visas.
  • Reintroduction Announcement: In February 2023, Russia announced its intention to reintroduce the E-Visa system later in the year, initially targeting a June launch date.
  • Delays: The launch date was subsequently delayed to July before finally settling on August 1, 2023.
  • Unified E-Visa: The relaunched E-Visa will now be a unified visa system, offering access to the entire country, aligning with Russia's goal of simplifying travel and promoting tourism.

With the proximity of the August 1 launch date, it is expected that the E-Visa service will return as planned, marking a significant development in Russia's visa policy for international travelers.
